Although not as common as hair loss among men, women also suffer from lost or thinning hair. There can be many causes behind a women losing her hair, including stress or depression, hormonal changes, menopause, illness or disease, or nutritional deficiency. Some medications can have the side effect of causing hair loss.
The connection between mind and body is much stronger than most people realize. Mental conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or stress and cause hair loss. In such circumstances, it’s necessary to treat the underlying mental condition, not the hair loss directly. Anti-depressants, stress management and lifestyle changes can have a positive effect. Intensely stressful physical events, such as major surgery, can cause temporary hair loss.

It’s also an unfortunate circumstance that many people don’t realize the importance proper nutrition play in the overall health. You diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. You should also limit your intake of refined products such as sugars and breads. A deficiency on vitamin D is known to cause hair loss, as is a deficiency in vitamin A. It’s rare for people in the developed world to suffer from nutritionally elated hair loss. There are some health conditions that can impair the body’s ability to absorb certain vitamins or minerals that could have this result.

Some medications are known to cause hair loss. Some common medication used to treat high blood pressure or high cholesterol can have this effect. Acne medication containing vitamin A, certain antibiotics and anti-fungal drugs, steroids, thyroid medications, and immune suppressant drugs have all been known to cause hair loss in some users. If your hair loss is recent and comes after you’ve started a new medication, that might be the cause.

One of most common causes of hair loss in women is a dysfunction of the thyroid. Both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism have been known to cause changes in hair health, including hair loss and changes in hair texture. For some people, these changes are the first indication that they have a thyroid problem. Thinning hair can be a side effect of Synthroid, the most common drugh used to treat thyroid disorders. If you’re on Synthroid and having hair loss, consult with your doctor.
Heredity can also play a role. Did any of your female relatives suffer from hair loss? Especially your mother, aunts, or grandmothers. Doctors can examine your scalp to see the size of your hair follicles. If a woman’s follicles vary in size, some thick and others thin, and there’s a history of hair loss in the family, there’s a good chance you might suffer from female pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. This hereditary condition affects about 30 million women in America, or about 50% of adult women. It mostly occurs in the 50s to 60s, but has been know to appear at even younger ages.
There’s even a chance your hair loss is self-induced. Hair treatments can damage the hair and scalp. Dyes, chemical treatments, harsh brushes, hot blow dryers, and hair straighteners can all cause damage and breakage.

Most of these conditions are treatable, and the hair loss can be reversed with medical treatments. But it’s important to know that the sooner treatment is started, the better the chances for resolving whatever condition is causing your hair loss.

Do you suffer from thinning hair? Bald spots? Both men and women can do something about it. There are hair surgery procedures available today that can take hair follicles from other, healthy areas and use them to replace lost or thinning hair. These procedures require little more than a local anesthetic and can show results in as little as 1-2 months. The level of discomfort is typically very moderate, and there is very little pain involved (if any).

One of the most successful hair transplantation procedures is Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS). FUSS is when the hair surgeon takes a strip (or more than one) from along the bottom back of your head (an area usually unaffected by hair loss) and relocates it to the bald or thinning area. This popular process can give you a look that’s natural, healthy and permanent. Since it’s a transplant of your own hair, there’s not any problem with your body accepting the transplant. About the only drawback is some potential scarring in the donor locations, but this is covered by your remaining hair.

For smaller hair loss areas, you can get the follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure performed. Unlike FUSS< which uses large section of donor scalp, FUE takes much smaller donor hair from the back of your head, or even your chest or thighs. This procedure is sometimes used in conjunction with FUSS to make sure all bald areas are covered.

Both Follicular Unit Strip Surgery and Follicular Unit Extraction require a local anesthetic and recovery can involve discomfort, but rarely any pain. Replanted hair typically goes through a period of shedding (falling out) before new growth begins. The transplanted hair falls out in 2 to 4 weeks and new hair starts growing. It can take 3 to 4 months for the new hair to fully grow in, after which you’ll see normal growth of about a half-inch a month.

Replanted hair areas occasionally develop small scabs, but these scabs heal within 4 to 10 days. A few patients may experience swelling, but, too, resolves within the first few days of the procedure. Skin irritation is another side effect. If irritation occurs, the doctor will provide a medicated shampoo for you to use until the irritation goes away.

The third hair replacement technique is much more involved. It’s called Scalp Reduction and can only be done on the top of the head. A scalp reduction is when the surgeon removes an area of bald scalp, stretches the remaining scalp (with hair) to cover it, then stitches it up. The stitched area shows no hair growth and will be a visible scar until the hair grows to cover it. A scalp reduction can only be used to treat and area 2 to 5 centimeters wide at one time, and patient who opt for this may need multiple operations to completely remove the bald area. There has to be enough time between surgeries to allow for your scalp skin to recover it’s elasticity. This is a more painful procedure with more risks then FUSS or FUE, and the expense here is greater as well.

Regardless of what procedure you choose, you’ll be advised to void heavy physical activities for 2 weeks after having surgery. Some people can go back to work within the next few days (or sooner), while others will need up to a week to recover. Cost for FUSS or FUE starts around $1500 and will vary depending on location and what physician you use. Scalp reduction surgery is more expensive. Whatever procedure you choose, it’s important to work with the surgeon through the procedure to maximize your results and recover as quickly as possible.

Over the last 20 years, laser hair removal has emerged as a reliable way to get rid of unwanted hair. This precise technique delivers heat energy right to the follicle, causing a dramatic reduction in the follicle’s ability to grow hair. Repeated treatments (ranging from 4 – 8) can usually completely eliminate hair growth for most people.

Like any medical procedure, however, there are some risks of side effects involved with the laser hair removal procedure. The most common (and almost always temporary) side effects can include:

Skin irritation
Crusting or scabbing of the skin in the treatment area
Change in skin color of the treatment area

There are risk of more serious sides as well, especially if the wrong type of laser was used, the laser was set to the wring levels, or the doctor or technician administering the treatments was careless or lacked skill:

Blistering that can cause permanent scarring

Other changes in skin texture (roughening or thickening of the skin)

Permanent skin pigmentation changes (usually dark skin getting lighter)

There are some thing you can do to minimize your risk of side effect. First and foremost, do your research. Make sure you find a board certified, preferable a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. You also want him or her to have experience administering laser hair removal treatments. Sometimes, although you see the doctor for the initial appointment, it might be that the treatment is administered by a nurse, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant or a laser technician. If that’s the case, make sure the Doctor supervises the procedure.

One thing you want to watch out for is beauty salons, day spas or other places that offer laser hair removal. Many times the person doing the procedure is not a medical person and might not be properly trained.

You should always see a doctor before getting a treatment. At that first appointment, there are several things you want to discuss your expectations for the procedure and your medical history, including injuries, diseases and any medication you may be using> You’ll want to set up a treatment plan and take before photos to keep track of your progress.

Once you’ve decided to go for the treatment, there are things you should do to be ready:

Avoid the sun. Since darker skin absorbs more energy from the laser, you want you skin to be as light as possible.

If the treatment area is tan, you need to wait for it to completely fade before getting the procedure

Avoid activities that irritate the skin, such as plucking or waxing the hair.

Shaving is OK, since it preserves the hair shaft and follicle. There are even some studies suggest that indicate shaving before laser hair removal can improve the result!

Once the procedure is complete, you’ll probably notice some redness and swelling. This usually goes away after the first few hours, although you may notice a stinging sensation along with some sensitivity that can last for up to a day. There’s also a chance you may see some scabbing.

It can take up to a week to completely heal from the laser treatment. During that time, wash your skin gently with soap and water. Don’t pick at the crust or scabs (if you have any) and avoid harsher soaps and scrubbing. You also want to avoid the sun until healing is complete.

Individual results from of laser hair removal can vary from person to person. Multiple treatments are typically required to accomplish long term hair loss. For most patients, 4 to 6 treatments spaced over a year or so are usually enough for them to see the results they want. Even then, you might require additional touch-up treatments every 12 – 18 months.

Despite the easy availability of laser hair removal treatment, always remember that it’s a medical procedure. Do proper preparation and you’ll minimize the potential side effects and increase your chances of a successful outcome.

Many people who have excess hair, or hair in areas where they don’t want to have hair, are turning to laser hair removal surgery. Using lasers to remove hair started in 1997 and the procedure has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is a medical procedure where a laser is used to removed the unwanted hair. A dermatological laser produces pulses of high-energy light. This light is targeted to individual hair follicles, where the heat from the laser causes the follicle to stop growing hair. It can take more than one application of the laser to get to the point where the follicle no longer grows any hair at all.

The way laser hair removal works is through what’s called selective photothermolysis (SPTL). What means is that a match is made between a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain the best possible effect on the hair follicle while at the same time minimizing the effect on the surrounding skin. It’s a scientific principle that dark object absorb light energy better than light, so laser energy is tuned to be absorbed much more quickly by the dark hair than it is by the skin.

The color of hair is determined by a substance called melanin. There are two types of melanin the determine hair color: eumelanin for brown or black hair and pheomelanin for blonde or red. Laser treatment is only effective for black or brown hair. That’s why laser hair removal works best for people with a light complexion and dark hair. The treatment works because the energy (heat) from the laser is absorbed by the pigment of the hair (which is why dark hair responds best). The most common areas treated include the face (upper lip, cheeks, chin), legs (bikini line), and armpits. Men sometimes treat excessive back hair.

It takes a deft touch to operate a laser hair removal device. If done haphazardly, it’s possible that the skin surrounding the follicle can be damaged, which can cause pigment (color) changes in the skin. The laser has to deliver enough heat to affect the follicle, but not so much that it damages the skin. Darker skin more easily absorbs the laser energy, which is why the procedure works better for people with dark hair and lighter skin. There are different types of lasers that use different wavelengths based on your hair/skin color combination. Your doctor will consult with you to determine which one is right for the results you want.

Don’t expect the hair to disappear with only one treatment. Depending of the location, thickness of hair, hair color, and skin color, it might take several treatments for you to achieve the final results you’re looking for. The usual number of treatments to permanently get rid of unwanted hair is three to seven, spaced out evenly at every four to eight weeks.

Despite what you may have heard, laser hair treatment rarely results in a complete stoppage of hair growth. What usually happens is the hair will get thinner and more slow growing with each treatment. It’s rare though for the hair to completely stop growing. What you usually end up with is a case where you might eventually have to go every 12 – 18 months for touch-up to remain hair free. How frequently you’ll need these touch up treatments depends on several factors, including the area treated and the specific characteristics of your hair and skin.

If you’re experiencing hair loss, you might be considering hair replacement surgery. While this procedure is much more advanced than it used to be, and the results are much more predictable, it’s good to fully educate yourself about the process. Hair transplant surgery is a type of cosmetic surgery, where the doctor creates the look of a a full head of hair by using hair from a donor area.

It’s important to understand that a hair transplant doesn’t stop any additional hair loss. The transplanted hair will remain, but many men continue to loss hair due to male pattern baldness. This can result in odd patches of hair and might require additional hair transplant operations for the desired appearance. Although hair surgery can offer fantastic results, it’s important that you are realistic with your expectations.

No matter how successful the operation was, there are potential side effects. For most patients, these side effects are very minimal and short-lasting. While there is the potential for serious side effects, such instances are very rare.

Hair surgery, like any other surgery, has limitations and potential risks. Not everyone is a good candidate. You need to have a adequate hair density in the donor area in order for it to be transplanted. Those individuals who have diffuse (widespread) hair loss don’t make good candidates.

Some of the most common after-effects from a hair transplant include

Headaches resulting from the manipulation of the scalp during the operation

Bleeding and scabbing in the transplant area

Numbness or tenderness in the scalp

Thinning of existing hair

Scalp redness

Redness, numbness and thinning hair known as “shock loss” are the most common, but all are temporary and typically resolve within a few weeks of the procedure.

Some less common side effects include

Swelling around the forehead, eyes, cheeks and nose. This swelling appears within a day or two of the procedure and can last 2-5 days.

Itchy scalp (due to the healing process). Be sure not to scratch it!

Infections in the transplant area

Your hair surgeon will give you a list of things you need to do during your recovery period. This list might include things such as using ice for swelling, over-the-counter pain relief medications like Tylenol and Advil, and to avoid strenuous physical activity.

Something that most patients don’t think about is that once you have hair surgery, you won’t be able to shave your head due to the scarring. Although the scarring won’t be visible due to growth of the donor hair, if you shave your head or cut your hair to short, it can be seen. This is much less a factor with modern procedures than in days past. For some patients, the scarring could be so minimal that they are still able to wear their hair quite short without the scars being to evident.

The main thing you need to understand is that a transplant doesn’t stop the loss of hair in area around the transplant area. If you get your transplant as a fairly young age (high 30s to early 40s) it’s entirely possible that your balding will progress, leaving you with additional areas of hair loss around the transplant area. Many patient are prescribed the use of topical hair loss treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil, but some people don’t respond to these drugs and will continue to lose hair. You could always get additional transplants to cover the new balding areas, but you can run the risk of running low on donor hair, giving your head a patchy appearance.

For most people, a hair transplant can provide a very satisfying result. Nut like any medical procedure, there are risks involved. If you’re considering hair surgery, discuss these risks adn potential side effects with your doctor so you can make the best choice possible for you.
